How Two Strangers on Loqui Turned a 1 AM Call into a Real Friendship

A lot of people who open Loqui for the first time start as two total strangers. A Talker with something on their heart, and a Listener ready to hear what they have to say.

Oftentimes, those two strangers become acquaintances. And quickly, those acquaintances grow into genuine, deep friendships built on trust, consistency, and real conversation right inside the app.

If you’ve ever felt nervous about reaching out to someone you don’t know, especially late at night, you’re not the only one. One of our members felt exactly the same way.

“I Thought It’d Be Super Awkward”

“Honestly, I thought it’d be super awkward talking to a random stranger at 1 AM. But we clicked right away, and now I literally wait to see when she’s online because she just gets it.”

That fear of awkwardness is so common. But there’s a reason talking to a stranger can feel easier than opening up to someone you know. There’s no history, no expectations, and no worrying about what they’ll think of you tomorrow. For many members, it’s the anonymity that makes this work.

Why Late Nights Matter

Late at night is often when people need someone to talk to the most. The house is quiet, everyone else is asleep, and your thoughts get loud. Having a real person on the other end at that hour can make all the difference, and our night-owl Listeners know that well.

What Turns One Call Into a Friendship

It usually comes down to the same things: trust, consistency, and real conversation. A Listener who’s there again the next time. A Talker who feels safe enough to come back. Little by little, two strangers start to feel like old friends. And if your favorite Listener is offline, you can still send them a message and pick up where you left off.

Where It All Started

Where it all started: A simple sketch that became the foundation for Loqui Listening before launching in January 2025.

When I first started building Loqui in June 2024, it was more of a hobby project than what it is today. I had been a top listener for years on another app that eventually shut down its support. I saw firsthand how much people needed a safe, reliable space to just talk and feel understood, so I decided to build Loqui.

From a Hobby Project to a Growing Community

Looking at where Loqui is today providing support to so many people, passing over 100,000 minutes of real, meaningful conversations—is incredibly humbling to me. What started as an idea to fill a gap has grown into a community that proves every single day how much human connection still matters.

Update: Since this post was published, we’ve passed 106,500 minutes of real connection 💙

Thank You, Listeners and Talkers

Thank you to our Listeners for consistently making themselves available day and night to show up for others. And thank you to every Talker for trusting us with your thoughts, your hard days, and your stories. None of this exists without this community.

If you’re the person friends always call when things get hard, you might make a great Listener too. Here’s how you can turn your empathy into a support system.

Looking for Someone to Talk To at Night?

Whether it’s 1 AM or 1 PM, you don’t need a big reason to reach out. If you’ve been asking yourself, “where can I find someone to talk to right now?”, Loqui is one place you can start.

Your first 15 minutes are free, with no subscription. You can pick a Listener whose profile feels right, or tap Talk to a Listener Now to reach whoever is available first. Learn more on our Safety and Pricing pages.

A Few Questions People Often Ask

Is it weird to talk to a stranger?

Most people feel a little nervous the first time. Many are surprised at how natural it feels once the conversation starts, just like the member in this story.

Can I talk to the same Listener again?

Yes. You can browse Listener profiles and call a specific Listener when they’re online. When they’re offline, you can still send them a message.

Can I find someone to talk to at night?

Yes. Listeners choose their own hours, and many are online late at night. Open the app to see who’s available right now.

Is Loqui the same as therapy?

No. Loqui is peer support and human connection. Our Listeners aren’t therapists or medical professionals, and Loqui isn’t a replacement for professional care. Many people use it alongside therapy. You’ll find more answers on our FAQ page.
