How One Night-Owl Listener is Rewriting the Script on Human Connection

50 Hours in 50 Days

Fifty days ago, Doreen joined Loqui with one simple goal: to be there for people who needed someone to listen.
This past week, she reached an incredible milestone: more than 3,000 minutes of listening to strangers from around the world so they are not alone. That is exactly 50 hours spent helping people feel heard in 50 days.
Behind those 3,000 minutes are conversations that truly mattered. People reached out because they couldn’t sleep, had just lost a parent, were struggling with anxiety, wanted to process a difficult relationship, or simply needed someone who would listen without judgment. Others called because they felt lonely, overwhelmed, or just wanted someone to think out loud with for a while. Every conversation was different, but each one had something in common: someone decided they didn’t have to carry their thoughts alone.

Shifted Expectations and Surprising Connections

Loqui: When you first started taking calls in Loqui, what were your expectations? After spending more than 3,000 minutes and 50 hours listening to strangers, how have those expectations changed, and what has surprised you the most?

Doreen:When I first started as a Loqui Listener, I thought it would be a great way to help people feel heard, seen, valued, and hopeful, which is my aim in all my interactions. My expectation of being a listener when I first started was, perhaps, a bit confining.

Now that I’ve been a Loqui Listener for a little bit, my expectations have grown and shifted as I realized that people also want a friend, companionship, someone to laugh with, play fun puzzle games with over the phone, to socialize, be accepted, a friendly respite from their day, or just to be sent well wishes.

One of my cutest and shortest calls was only a few minutes. When the call started, we exchanged happy pleasantries and the caller immediately asked me to say a prayer for them! I have zero experience in this area. And in fact, that was my first prayer I ever had to offer or recite. The caller did not seem to notice my inexperience so I think I did okay! The caller cheerfully thanked me, wished me a good night, and went on their way. Sometimes we all just want a cheerleader and support because life can be really, really hard sometimes. Being human is difficult.

What surprised me the most about being a Loqui Listener is how much my clients wanted to know about me, my experiences, or even just what I did that day by asking point-blank questions with curiosity—and always giving the option to decline divulging.

I thought being a Loqui Listener would be more about “crisis management” for lack of a better word, and me listening and letting them do 99% of the talking.

But it’s really more about human connection via a reciprocal dialogue of stories, shared experiences, and similar perspectives where they do most or half of the talking and I also contribute meaningful viewpoints.

I think this is what makes Loqui Listening so beautiful. Traditional help is very much needed and effective; for the times people seek connection, commiseration, and community, I would like to think I can help fill that space.”

The Consistency of Holding Space

What makes Doreen’s achievement so meaningful is the consistency behind it. In fewer than two months, she has replied to over 800 text messages, spent over 2,200 minutes on voice calls, and maintained an average call length of 58 minutes. Many callers have returned to speak with her again, choosing to reconnect because they found a voice they instantly trusted.

Whether conversations lasted one minute or two hours, she created a welcoming space where people felt comfortable sharing what was on their minds.

Loqui: An average call length of 58 minutes means your conversations can go incredibly deep. Has being a Listener changed you in any way, or affected how you connect with your own family, friends, or other people outside of the app?

Doreen:Being a Loqui Listener has changed me in realizing even more how little of life I will get to see and experience, and it makes me even more grateful, appreciative, and hopefully less impatient. It’s also taught me so much about the things I didn’t know I didn’t know. When it comes to connecting with my own family, friends, and people outside of the app, I focus to be even more thankful I have another hour or day with them. I want to continue moving through life with more grace, calm, and growth.”

Moving Beyond the Statistics

Over the last 50 days, Doreen has stepped up to listen to a wide array of human experiences, holding space for:

  • Mental health and deep anxiety
  • Grief after losing a loved one
  • Relationship challenges and feeling isolated
  • Sleeplessness and late-night racing thoughts
  • Co-regulation, companionship, and processing difficult emotions
  • Simply wanting a friend to talk with

These are not just statistics; they represent real people who found connection during moments when they needed it most.

Loqui: You have listened to people dealing with everything from late-night anxiety to deep grief. What is the most rewarding part about being that safe, anonymous space for someone when they feel completely alone?

Doreen:I think the most rewarding part of being a safe, anonymous space for someone when they feel completely alone is someone feeling comfortable enough to share their deepest fears, hopes, and dreams with me. Being vulnerable and extremely honest is not easy, and to do so with a complete stranger can be nerve-wracking.

The greatest honor and reward for me is anyone who gives me their time, their thoughts, and shares who they are. It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by John Joseph Powell.”

“I am afraid to tell you who I am, because if I tell you who I am, you may not like who I am, and it’s all that I have.”

The Heartbeat of Our Mission

At Loqui, our mission has always been simple: make sure that whenever someone needs to talk, a real person is there to listen. Doreen embodies that mission every single time she opens the app.

Congratulations, Doreen, on reaching 3,000 minutes of listening in just 50 days.

Thank you for reminding us that sometimes the most meaningful thing one person can offer another isn’t advice or solutions; it is simply their time, attention, and willingness to listen.

Here’s to the next 3,000 minutes inside Loqui. 💙
